3 Years, Just Us 2

This year, E and I decided to go low key for our anniversary week. E was only able to get two days off work and we didn't feel like rushing to go somewhere out of town. We considered checking into a hotel for a staycation as well, but couldn't quite muster the energy for it. Our bed is pretty comfortable, and it comes with Milou and our kitties, which is hard to beat.

Baby S and E, a lifetime ago
So, we spent the day before celebrating E's mother's boyfriend R's birthday. E's mom and R have been dating for over a decade so he usually refers to us as his son and daughter in law. About a year ago, R did some electrical work for this wonderful, hip Venice restaurant called The Barnyard, and since then the chef has been bugging R to come eat there.  Since we finally had an excuse, we decided to head there for dinner to celebrate. The chef was truly amazing, everything was fresh, organic and delicious and we would go back in a heart beat. E had the chicken, which turned out to be phenomenal, and I had a decadent steak. Even the olives warmed in oil were amazing, and I'm not usually an olive fan. At the end of the evening, the chef comped our 9 person dinner as a birthday gift for R. You truly couldn't pick a better restaurant and chef if you have a reason to celebrate or just want a delicious meal.
On our actual anniversary, we played it very low key. E surprised me with Roses, Orchids and groceries (!) when I woke up and we spent the morning lounging in bed. It was so sweet, and so thoughtful,  even though E is usually awesome about that stuff anyway. We had hoped to get tickets to see The Book of Mormon, which is supposed to be hilarious, but weren't able to find some for a decent price on such short notice. Instead, we decided on a blast from the past and headed down PCH to a little restaurant we spent New Years Eve at years and years ago.   It's a little hole in the wall, Italian place right across from the water that makes a mean truffle ravioli.  PCH is probably my favorite road to drive and we got to wind up and down the coast enjoying the ocean and each other's company.

All in all, I'd say it was a relaxing couple of days and I'm so happy to celebrate another year together with E. Although I'm hoping this is the last anniversary we spend just the two of us for a long time, I couldn't imagine spending my life with anyone else. We've been dealing with a LOT lately in our quest to build our family, with bad news followed by more bad news, and I couldn't do it if I didn't have E to lean on.

Happy 3rd/12th Anniversary my love. No matter how we make our family happen, and how we tackle the shit news we seem to keep getting, the important thing is that we do it together. You're my everything and I love you like crazy.

2 Years Married and Marriage Equality

Yesterday E and I celebrated our second year of marriage, on the same day that Gays and Lesbians took their fight for equal rights to the supreme court. I have to say it felt bittersweet to celebrate our happy, nationally recognized union while so many of those dear to me don't have the right to marry the people they love.

E and I were hoping to celebrate with some lovely, much needed massages, but as it turned out there was no availability at the massage center. Instead, we went to a delicious Italian dinner and got some amazing gelato, not a bad replacement if I do say so myself.  We had a lovely time, fairly low key, and it felt just perfect.

Two/eleven years in and E and I are so ready to take our family to new places. We're itching to expand, to buy some property, add a new fur baby, add a tiny human etc.  I'm looking forward to spending the rest of my life being married to E, as all couples should have the right to do, and I hope that this next year will bring with it big changes for equality and for our little family.

Anniversary Celebrations

While sitting at dinner for our anniversary, it occurred to E and I that we couldn't remember what we'd done for most some of our anniversaries.  Even when we could remember the "big" things we'd done, we couldn't remember which anniversaries we were celebrating. It's kind of awful, E even got me by asking what we did for our last anniversary and it took me a couple beats to figure it out....DUH, we got married!

5th Anniversary Promise Rings

So, after consulting facebook, photos, and various online journals, both dead and alive, we have determined the following:

2012 - 1st/10th - Mastros, and for our first wedding anniversary gift to each other, paper tickets to see Green Day's American Idol play.
2011 - 9th - We got Married! Yay!
2010 - 8th - Mastros? Probably?
2009 - 7th - The Smoke House? Maybe?
2008 - 6th - Picnic at the Beach! We had a fire pit and everything :)
2007 - 5th - Dinner at home with promise rings!
2006 - 4th - Apparently we had a big fight? Then probably went to the Smoke House.
2005 - 3rd - The Smoke House for dinner with Evan's family
2004 - 2nd - Evan came over for a bubble bath ;)
2003 - 1st - We went to the movies with friends :) And then had a sleep over, aww

I'm preserving this here because in a few more years who knows what we'll have forgotten. For the life of me I can't remember what we did in 2009, but an old journal post dated two weeks before indicated that we hadn't made plans yet. Whenever we couldn't figure what to do we usually went to the Smoke House so I think that's a safe bet.  It used to be our go to place until it kind of started to suck, and we got tired of driving out to Burbank.

I wonder what we'll do next year? Traditionally the second wedding anniversary is cotton so we'd better start planning now and we might be able to plan something memorable. Also, I would like to go back in time and punch my teenage self in the face. Text speak is quite possibly the most annoying thing on the planet.

Ten

Ten.

Ten years feels like a mountain. So much can happen in ten years that people had to come up with a name just for ten, a decade, a monument to the sheer force of that which changes. Tens of millions of babies are born, children grow up, people fall in love, people die. Ten years ago E and I decided to go out, but ten years before that I was a little girl in Kindergarten wondering if my Minnie Mouse glasses and eye patch made me different. Ten is so big that it's sometimes hard to wrap our heads around, and then poof, it's gone. You're still listening to Fleetwood Mac while everyone else is talking about Nirvana and come on man, where have you been the past ten years?

The past ten years with E have been an incredible collection of moments, the wonderful and the not so wonderful. Holding hands as we walked along the Venice canals to arguing over a croissant until we're blue in the face and ready to tear out our hair. Moments where we were at our best and rose to the occasion, and moments where we reached new, and previously unknown, lows.

Somewhere along the line our relationship evolved. "Yes Ma'am" as he helped me make the bed, let me open that car door and putting on cologne every time we went out became whoops I farted into your seat. Can you help me rip this blister off?  Not remembering what privacy is.

A year in, I still don't know if marriage changed the intimacy of being with each other. I know it made things more real, more clear, like cleaning smudged fingerprints off the glasses that you were already wearing, even if they were too cloudy to see out of. It's given us a drive towards a future that has become so close I can almost touch it and changed the last bit of "me" to "us".

We joke all the time that our honeymoon phase ended in year three.  We moved past the starry eyed, never arguing phase into a place I don't think either of us expected to find ourselves. Who really thinks that they're going to marry their high school sweetheart, that the person you are at 15 will be just as attractive and compatible as the person you are at 25?  That the person you take to prom in his rental suit and grocery store corsage will be the one who waits for you in his tailored suit at the alter?

What's even more incredible to me is not that we've changed, but how it happened. Neither of us is the same person we used to be. Our hopes, dreams and goals have evolved. Our strengths and weaknesses adjusted, our sense of humor more refined (or so we'd like to think). We're not the same children we were when we first fell in love, we're not even the same adolescents we were when we reevaluated our relationship with all it's flaws and imperfections and decided we wanted to try and make it work.  But like the elusive word that you just can't find on the tip of your tongue, one breath of the terrible cologne E used to wear at 17 can bring everything crashing back down like it was yesterday.

E still makes me laugh like he used to when I was riding in his beat up, oil leaking station wagon. A smile and sweet word still carries my heart into the back of my throat. It was sad to see the days of blushes and hidden bodily functions fade into the past. Everyone likes to be wined and dined, to breathe in and savor that moment of anticipation before he tells you something new or you divulge a special secret. But then you wake up one morning and realize that you're working towards the same future, that you're playing for the same team and no matter how you screw up you have each others back because you have each other and that's all that matters. You become each others secret keeper and story teller and even though you know the words, the ending is just as exciting as the first time you heard it. That's more precious than I could have ever imagined and even though my seat will probably smell like farts tomorrow, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Happy First and Tenth Anniversary E. Here's to the next ten. Here's to our future.
